Initially, she adhered to a rigid approach of meticulously planning every detail before execution. However, she soon realized that such rigidity is incompatible with the dynamic nature of scientific research. Experiment failures, flawed ideas, and extended timelines are all common occurrences that cannot always be predicted or controlled. Corey learned the importance of relinquishing rigid expectations and embracing the inherent unpredictability of scientific inquiry. This flexibility and acceptance of uncertainty emerged as invaluable lessons from her time in graduate school.

Another valuable lesson Corey learned during grad school was about embracing the process itself, rather than focusing solely on immediate results. Unlike earlier education stages where outcomes are often immediate and tangible, in grad school, the gratification of completion may not be readily apparent. This lack of instant gratification can make the journey feel unrewarding at times. However, Corey realized that finding satisfaction in the day-to-day tasks is essential, as they ultimately shape our lives.

A Solitary Voyage: Living Life to the Fullest Beyond the Outcome

In addition, each PhD journey is unique, making it impossible to compare oneself to others or gauge progress easily, and it is unhealthy and futile to do so. A PhD is fundamentally different from anything you have experienced as a student before. It's not about simply studying to pass exams or completing assignments to earn top grades like in undergraduate programs. Embarking on a PhD journey introduces an entirely new dynamic characterized by its unstructured nature, lack of immediate feedback, and absence of clear benchmarks. This sudden shift can trigger a significant identity crisis for many. Unfortunately, this aspect of PhD life is often overlooked when advising prospective students. Nonetheless, learning to embrace the process and find joy in everyday tasks is crucial not only in academia but also in life in general. We live day by day, and our focus should be on how we navigate each moment rather than on distant outcomes or awards. As she said, "It's not about whether I can win an award after 100 days. It's about how I live through these 100 days, embracing the challenges and growth opportunities along the way.

Life's Twists and Turns: Bold Exploration, Fearless Questions, Personal Growth

Corey 's transition from an English major to a cognitive neuroscientist provides valuable lessons for navigating the uncertainties of academic and career paths.
